Sustainability Policy

Designing spaces that feel good for people, places and the planet.

1. Why this matters to us

At Ches & Co, sustainability isn’t an add-on, it’s something we genuinely care about and consider in everything we do. From day-to-day studio practices to the materials we source and the way we manage waste on site, we always aim to make choices that are kinder to the environment and better for the communities around us.

It’s why we’re so careful about who we work with – choosing suppliers and partners who take their footprint seriously pushes us to keep improving ours.

2. Where this policy applies

This policy covers every interior design project we work on – both residential and commercial. It guides how we approach design concepts, material choices, procurement, installation and the way we review our work once a space is complete.

3. Our Commitment to Sustainable Design

3.1 Doing things the right way

We follow UK environmental legislation and recognised sustainability standards (such as BREEAM, WELL, LEED and ISO 14001) whenever required or appropriate. These frameworks help us make responsible decisions and ensure our work aligns with best practice.

3.2 Choosing materials with care

Wherever possible, we specify materials that are responsibly sourced, long-lasting and better for the planet, such as:

  • FSC or PEFC-certified timber

  • Reclaimed or recycled materials

  • Low-VOC or VOC-free paints, finishes and adhesives

  • Products with clear environmental certifications (e.g., EPDs, Cradle to Cradle)

We love bringing character to a project through reclaimed pieces or by incorporating items our clients already own, helping reduce waste while celebrating what makes a space feel personal.

3.3 Reducing environmental impact

We look for thoughtful ways to lower the footprint of every project - small changes that together make a meaningful difference:

  • Prioritising low-carbon materials

  • Reusing existing fittings wherever it makes sense

  • Minimising construction waste

  • Specifying energy-efficient lighting and smart controls

  • Supporting layouts that maximise natural light and ventilation

3.4 Minimising waste

We follow the UK waste hierarchy: Prevent → Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → Recover → Dispose.

This means we:

  • Plan waste-reduction strategies at the start of each project

  • Partner with suppliers and contractors who offer take-back or recycling schemes

  • Donate furniture and fittings to local charities and community groups wherever we can

  • Ensure unavoidable waste is handled safely and responsibly

3.5 Designing healthy, welcoming interiors

Sustainability also includes wellbeing, so we:

  • Choose materials that support good indoor air quality

  • Use biophilic design principles to connect people with nature

  • Consider accessibility, comfort and inclusivity from the outset

  • Pay attention to acoustics, ergonomics and thermal comfort to create spaces that simply feel better to be in

3.6 Working ethically and locally

We choose our suppliers and contractors carefully, prioritising those who share our values.

Where possible, we work with local or UK-based partners - reducing transport emissions and supporting our local economy.

3.7 Sharing knowledge and working together

We believe sustainability works best when everyone is involved, so we:

  • Talk openly with clients about sustainable options

  • Encourage collaboration and awareness within our team

  • Share best practice with contractors and partners

  • Keep learning and improving together

3.8 Always improving

We regularly review how we’re doing and look for ways to keep raising our standards. When we can, we review completed projects to learn what’s working well and where we can do even better.

4. Who is responsible

  • Directors & Employees: Ensure this policy is put into action and that resources are available

  • Designers: Embed sustainable principles in all design decisions

  • Suppliers & Contractors: Follow the sustainability guidelines provided for each project

5. Reviewing this policy

We review this policy every year or sooner if needed, making sure it always reflects current legislation, industry standards and our own commitment to doing better.
